Will I need special training?
Yes. Free Orientation and Basic Tutor Training workshop sessions are held usually twice a year. They provide the tutor with the necessary insights and techniques needed to become a successful tutor. Other optional training workshops are also offered throughout the year.
What type of Basic Tutor Training is offered?
At The Learning Exchange, a customized and interactive training workshop has been developed to suit the needs of our members. Once you've completed the course, you'll receive a TLE certificate and pin.
TLE's Basic Tutor Training features:
- Orientation to TLE and literacy
- Reading, writing and word study strategies
- Listening and speaking strategies
- Learning styles
- Information & Communication Technologies (ICTs)
- Materials & goal setting
- Lesson planning
- Using the computer and Internet
- Getting started with a student: Match outlines
- Using Learning Links
When does Basic Tutor Training take place?
Although you can tutor based on your regular availability, tutor training is scheduled to suit the average schedule of our potential volunteers. Many volunteers work during the day; tutor training often takes place one evening a week 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for five consecutive weeks. This may change based on the availability of the volunteer candidates, school schedule, etc. For example, tutor training can take place during the day if there are enough people to attend the training course.
Do I have to attend training if I'm going to volunteer for TLE but not
be a tutor?
Yes. Our Orientation session is designed for all potential volunteers. It is an opportunity to see if we are right for each other, meet fellow candidates and learn all about literacy and TLE.
Is there a charge to volunteers for Orientation or Basic Tutor Training?
No. Our basic training is free to all potential volunteers.
Providing space is available, training courses may be open to other members of the community. If you are attending as a non-member (i.e. from another community organization) there may be a charge to cover the cost of materials.
Is there more training after Basic Tutor Training and Orientation?
Yes. Additional workshops and training opportunities are offered every year to tutors and volunteers based on the expressed needs of the members.
