What is the purpose of a math tutor?
The purpose of a math tutor is to tutor an adult student or a small group of students in mathematical concepts and/or numeracy skills.
What are the requirements of a math tutor?
The duties of a computer tutor are to:
- Set goals and plan with the student
- Find and prepare tutoring material that suits the student's ability, goals and interests
- Tutor students at TLE Centre in mathematical concepts and/or numeracy skills
- Maintain a positive, warm attitude that encourages the student/tutor to learn
- Discuss progress with the Executive Director, and/or teacher; discuss problems/issues if they arise
- Attend various in-service workshops and tutor discussion groups after tutoring begins
- Inform staff at TLE Centre about changes in meeting times, schedule or location
- Complete any necessary tutor reports and keep a record of hours volunteered with TLE
What are the requirements of a math tutor?
Volunteering takes time and commitment. The following requirements apply:
- Completion of Basic Tutor Training sessions
- Minimum high school leaving certificate
- Good basic skills in reading, writing, and math
- Appropriate knowledge of math to meet student's needs (i.e. Enough mathematical knowledge/skill to teach a student at a secondary II level)
- A patient, open-minded, flexible attitude
- Willingness to try new and creative ways of tutoring
- Good verbal skills in English and good listening skills
- The ability to be on time for weekly appointments
- Respect for confidentiality
- Work independently to provide support to the student/tutor
- Provide references and sign Confidentiality Statement
How much time is required?
- 15 hours of Basic Tutor Training
- A commitment of eight to twelve months preferred when working as a one-to-one tutor
- Available a minimum of 3 hours per week for tutoring and up to one hour per week of planning and preparation
- 3-6 hours of in-service workshops per year after tutoring begins
Can I be paid as a tutor?
No. At TLE all of our tutors are volunteers. We are a volunteer not-for-profit organization offering free help to students in need of our services.
